Illustrations for Kohl Journal
(July 2016)

The four mixed media pieces within this issue of Kohl: Journal for Body and Gender Research were illustrated by Salam Shokor using charcoal and watercolor on paper.
I posed for Salam with little instruction, posturing myself as I felt comfortable with the conscious intent of conveying either pleasure or self-defense (the two themes specific to this issue).
As a means of capturing raw emotion, Salam allowed expression to overpower and often distort my actual physical proportions. This lent the drawings a sketchy and expressive overall aesthetic.
Once completed, I digitally juxtaposed excerpts from Simone De Beauvoir's seminal text, "The Second Sex", onto the illustrations of my body.

The illustrations were featured in Kohl: a Journal for Body and Gender Research (vol. 2, no.1).
