String Mural

(May 2016)

The American University of Beirut's medical building commissioned me to create a series of art pieces to breathe life into the space.

Research takes us in many directions before reaching its ultimate objective. Nail-string art mirrors this process in how it explores a multitude of paths before achieving its goal. The intricate overlapping of string attempts to express the complexity inherent in laboratory research. I chose the quote, "Science is magic that works”, by novelist Kurt Vonnegut to highlight the often overlooked similarities which bind the Arts and Sciences.

This labor of love was crafted over a period of five days, using up 2,000+ nails and over 2 kilometers of yarn. Click here to read my blog post about the process.

The American University Medical Center (AUBMC) asked me to create this 15 x 2.5 meter string mural. The piece required 15 kg of nails and countless balls of yarn to pull off. The choice of colors and visual elements was guided by the mural's proximity to the Children's Cancer Center Of Lebanon. The design was created Louai Kaakani and myself based on the quote "It's not how much you do but how much love you put in the doing" by Mother Teresa.
